Georgios P. Anagnostopoulos, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Athens from 1927 to 1936, is a neglected figure of Greek linguistics, mostly due to his early passing in 1936, at the age of 52. This volume includes the articles “Greek during the Alexandrian and Roman times”, “Medieval Greek”, “Modern Greek”, “Grammar and syntax”, and “Spelling”, published in the volume “Greece” of the Great Greek Encyclopedia [Μεγάλη Ελληνική Εγκυκλοπαίδεια] in 1934 (2nd ed. 1956, pp. 89–111).
Although written many years ago, and given that our current understanding of many issues related to the history of Hellenistic, Medieval and Modern Greek has changed, the texts continue to be interesting not only as the views of a great scholar who was deeply cognizant of the science of his time, but also as a concise yet comprehensive introduction to the study of these critical periods in the history of Greek.
