This book presents the Paleolithic Age in western Achaia, as revealed by the findings of a long-term field research, during which dozens of Paleolithic sites were identified and numerous remains were collected, testifying to the uninterrupted habitation of the area for at least 300 thousand years. As part of the research, almost five thousand stone tools were studied, coming from the Peiros River valley, the coast of the Patraikos Gulf and the northern foothills of Mount Movris. In addition, the discovery of a mammoth skeleton and other fossilized bones in the Lousika region provided important information about the fauna and climatic conditions of the wider area at that time.
Overall, the field research brought to light valuable data on the Paleolithic Age in western Achaia, both for the natural environment and the changes in the landscape and for the technological and cultural stage of its inhabitants. Western Achaia is now one of the few regions of our country that have been the subject of thorough investigation of this period. The high density and the number of Paleolithic remains that were identified, collected and studied enrich our knowledge of this distant and extremely long period of remote prehistory. The results of this research demonstrate, once again, that the paucity of data on the Paleolithic Age in Greece does not indicate an absence of Paleolithic habitation, but is due solely to the lack of specialized relevant research. From this perspective, this publication aspires to be a catalyst for undertaking similar research in other areas, so as to "fill" the map of Greece with Paleolithic sites, which until recently remained empty in the relevant publications.
