Preface

This collection of essays and reviews dealing with ancient (mainly Greek) drama contains only one new item - the first; the others have all appeared in periodical or book form during the last twenty five years.  They are here arranged roughly by subject, rather than in the order of their composition; since they appear unaltered (except for minor corrections), the critical reader is respectfully asked to bear in mind the date of publication in each case. Some items were omitted as too trivil or overly polemical; I hope that those here presented make enough of a contribution to learning or appreciation to justify theri revival.
