PREFATORY NOTE

These Lectures, here printed as written for delivery, were prepared during my residence in Europe in 1922, and at places without libraries containg books on Greek literature.  Since my return I have had the advantage of consulting Heinemann's Die tragischen Gestalten der Griechen in der Weltliterature, published in 1922. To this work I am indebted for information concerning certain German tragedies that deal with the chief personages of the Prometheus and the Orestea.

By agreement with the authorities of the University of California, these Lectures are designed to serve as an introduction to a further study of the Mind and Art of Aeschylus, to be published by Harvard University at some future date.
