Lost Greek painting reemerges where no one expected it: in the forgotten colors of clay figurines.
Celebrated in ancient texts and romanticized in the modern era due to its near-total disappearance, Greek painting nevertheless remains accessible through a category of objects long overlooked: small-scale terracotta sculpture. For those who know how to read them, these miniature works constitute a genuine treasure for rediscovering a fundamental element of Greek art—color. Combining archaeology, art history, and archaeometry, this investigation offers the first comprehensive synthesis of the subject. It reveals the refinement and diversity of the techniques employed by painters shaped by a pictorial culture shared with large-scale painting, marble sculpture, and small objects alike. Finally, the book brings to light, for specialists and general readers alike, the care—even luxury—devoted to the colored finishing of these offerings, rare witnesses to a little-known everyday life in which women, so often invisible in Greek society, played an essential role.
