A multifaceted personality, theologian, philosopher, philologist, positive scientist, Bulgaris was undoubtedly the greatest teacher of the nation. With his wisdom and erudition, with his teaching activity and work, he inaugurated a new era in the intellectual history of the new Hellenism. He succeeded in grafting Greek education with modern currents of thought and, by balancing between scholarship and faith, in bridging the spiritual tradition of Orthodoxy with that of classical education.
Eugene Voulgaris was the quintessential intellectual priest of the 18th century who fought far from his homeland for the benefit of enslaved Greece and passionately supported the value of higher education.
