For many people the word "mythology" has come to mean a collection fo stories about the gods and goddesses of Greece and Rome: we have half forgotten that we have a mythology of our own.  Fortunately, the ancient myths of the Anglo-Saxon and Norse tribes were preserved for hundrends of years, first orally and then in manuscript in Iceland.

Gods of the North deals with our "old" gods - Odin, Thor, Tyr, Balder and the rest - whose monuments in English are now some of the names of the days of the week such as Wednesday occassional place - names such as Thundersley and folk tales such as that of the Wild Hunt.

The author's succinct historical introduction shows the links between Englishemen Norsemen Germans and other related continental tribes while in his final chapter he assesses the relevance of our ancient mythology for us today.
